Thank you, @Beamish! That's wonderful!

Okay, we're going to tackle this because I loves me a challenge!

The Champions of Timely Comics

Starting with the back row, from left to right:

Sub-Mariner, Miss America, Spitfire, Union Jack
Golden Age Vision, Namora (Could be wrong about that), Red Raven, Toro, Original Human Torch
Captain America, Blue Diamond, Whizzer
Patriot, Golden Age Angel, Silver Scorpion, Blazing Skull, Thin Man, Bucky Barnes

The Justice Society of America

Starting with the back row, from left to right:

Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt, Golden Age Robin, Hourman, Golden Age Wonder Woman, Golden Age Superman
Star Spangled Kid, Golden Age Atom, Golden Age Hawkman, Huntress, Golden Age Flash, Dr. Fate
Johnny Thunder, Golden Age Green Lantern, Power Girl, Dr. Mid-Nite, Wildcat

Now that Marvel and DC are doing crossovers again, a JSA/Invaders book would be a dream come true. And in the immortal words of the rock group Blondie "Dreaming is free ..."

As big as a Marvel fan as I am, I don't think I knew there was a golden age Vision ...

Yes sir. The Golden Age Vision, also called Aarkus, is an alien law enforcement officer from another dimension. He could appear in our world through smoke. He was created by the same two guys who created Captain America: Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. He first appeared in Marvel Mystery Comics #13 in November, 1940.

I had everyone else, except Silver Scorpion (and I didn't notice Namora.)

Good job! You know, I'm still not convinced that's Namora. The costume and headdress don't look right. The problem is, I don't know who else it could be. Anyone else care to take a stab at it?

Seeing SDcomics's picture makes me want a new classic Thor, as he's in dire need of an update, a taller version of that armored look for Iron Man, and a Perez style Beast. Then again, I'd love a black-and-red suit Wonder Man from his West Coast days.

Also, I forgot about Blazing Skull and thought for a moment someone had photoshopped Ghost Rider's head over a different character's body. I looked at that flaming skull and all I could hear was Beavis's "Hey, how's it going?" from "Beavis and Butt-Head".

As for Mattel, I hope that Hasbro's "Marvel Legends" toys try more to compete with their lower prices. Charging $27.99 for a single "Marvel Legends" figure with less accessories than before is not going to be smart for Hasbro in the long run.

This is the dream.

Hasbro has done a good job. They've given us nearly all those Avengers. We just need a Perez style Beast and a better Hercules.

Will Mattel do the same with the JLA? I hope so. We'll see.

That’s such a great image. I’d say Hasbro could also give us a Wasp in blue & white and a new Yellowjacket, but still, you could kinda fudge this with the versions we have, now that classic Falcon has arrived.

On the JLA side, DCUC also did pretty well, aside from no Snapper Carr and the wrong costume for Zatanna. And sure, the late-stage Elongated Man could’ve been a lot better executed too.

Let’s hope for the best in the next year or two on both sides!

Of course there’s the JSA from the original drawing, but I wonder, has anyone ever put together a Defenders version of this? What 14-17 characters would you include in that?

Very solid line ups. I would add a new Yellowjacket and blue/white Wasp along with a Perez Beast to the list for needed Avengers in that picture. And for me personally, I really want classic Mantis and Swordsman to join that line up.

And my Justice League would also fudge in a Ted Kord Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. Loved those guys in Justice League International.

Oh God yes. An improved Yellowjacket and Wasp would be very much welcomed.

Oh, absolutely. In my mind the classic pre-disassembled Avengers aren't finished yet. I still want Mantis, Swordsman, Two-Gun Kid, Red Wolf, the Whizzer, Rick Jones, Jarvis and others I'm forgetting at the moment. We're getting there, but we still have a little ways to go.

Oh, God. You hadda ask.

To me, the Defenders are Dr. Strange, Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Silver Surfer, Clea, Valkyrie, Hawkeye, Nighthawk, Power Man (Luke Cage), Son of Satan, Yellowjacket, Daredevil, Red Guardian (Tania Belinskaya), Hellcat, Moon Knight, Devil-Slayer and the Wasp. I get all those and I'm happy.

I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting. Please don't send me hate mail.

It's so funny, because when Roy Thomas created the Defenders he did it by accident. He didn't realize that's what he was doing. Roy and artist Gene Colan were working on Dr Strange's book and doing a bang up job, but for whatever reason sales weren't what they should have been and the title got canceled. Worse, it was canceled unexpectedly and at the very last minute. Roy was in the middle of his Undying Ones saga and he really wanted to finish that up. He was also writing both Sub-Mariner and Hulk so he finished his Doc Strange story there. This is actually the first time Doc met Namor and the Hulk, Neither Subby or Jade Jaws were at Reed and Sue's wedding like everyone else was. You'll have to read Tales to Astonish 75 to find out why, but suffice it to say they were busy. So that wrapped up the Undying Ones story and the three went there separate ways never expecting to meet up again.

And then a few months later Roy teamed up Namor with the Hulk again in Sub-Mariner's mag and the Silver Surfer also dropped by. The trio had to stop a doomsday device and fight the Avengers while they were at it. Good stuff. The sales went up on those issues. Way up. Stan's no dummy, so he wanted to make them a permanent team in their own book. Roy suggested "The Titans Three" for the title. Stan said "No, Roy. That sucks." Then Stan the Man remembered an old TV show about a group of lawyers called The Defenders. The Man liked that name. Only caveat: Stan was still a little sore about the Surfer's book being canceled a couple of years earlier. He didn't want the Surfer in a monthly book again unless he was writing it. So Norrin got swapped out for Dr. Strange. And in late 1971, Marvel Feature number 1 hit the stands.

It's just really weird how these things work out sometimes.

Honestly leaving out Gargoyle feels like a hate crime. He's like currently 5th on my want list.

Also Beast needs to be there... the Perez Beast we need for Avengers would do nicely. Hank joined the team well before the 'New Defenders' era.

But both Gargoyle and Beast were members of tje team WAY longer than Yellow Jacket, Luke Cage and Moon Knight....
