Mattel MOTU Chronicles Movie Figures

With how lackluster the film's performance has been, how long might Chronicles be for this world, I can't help but wonder. Maybe it'll do well streaming and keep the flame going though, we'll see.
I posted about this in the actual movie thread, but one of the main Amazon execs has been pretty clear that they're fine with the way it's going, and they expect the movie's reputation to not only continue to drive interest at the theater and when it hits streaming, but just more generally toward the brand. Seems like this is the beginning of a strategy rather than a one-and-done.

I also have heard from a reliable source that Mattel is very pleased with the performance of the movie product so far. So even if the movie isn't doing well, which can be debated until the end of time, the merchandise is doing great. No reason Mattel would stop making product, although maybe they'd pivot to non-movie Chronicles stuff like KG and Scareglow, if the movie really does do poorly.

I saw the movie today! I was going to see it Tuesday but my shame of not seeing it opening weekend made me move it up to today. I loved it! I absolutely loved it. It was funny, action packed, nostalgic, and everyone in it was so likeable as the characters they portrayed.

Even 30 Seconds to Jesus did an amazing job as Skeletor. I'm sure his Echelon were thrilled. But I loved Nicholas as Adam/He-Man. He was so likeable. But it was the same for everyone. Man At Arms, Teela, Skeletor, Evil Lyn, everyone.

But Cringer. Baby Cringer made me so happy. But when Adam returned and was reunited with Cringer, fuck you, I cried. I have said before that Adam and Cringer were always such a special and important part of the story for me. As an animal lover and rescuer all my life, whose favorite animals are felines, and have had, and have now such unbelievable, special bonds with cats, it just melted my heart.

My best friend in the world is an orange cream colored female kitty named Chimbles who I raised from the time she was 2 weeks old. I just put myself in that spot. What if we had been separated for years, then were reunited.

I even thought of what it would be like being reunited with those who have passed on that I loved so dear. Then Cringer says "can I lick you now" I was emotional as it gets.

It was an amazing movie, and everything I had wished for when I was a kid.

@Super Camel there's an entire spoiler thread in the Lounge if you want to really go into details on the movie. Probably try to leave this thread spoiler free for those that didn't see it yet. Or spoiler tag.

But yeah, man. I'm right there with you. I wrote a whole thing about how much I love the movie. Definitely need a lot more Chronicles figures.

Ha well, I prefer a pivot to non-movie anyways, I just don't want another Masterverse/New Eternia situation!
Even if the movie does very well, there's only so many characters in the film. I'm positive we're going to see either a pivot to non-movie characters/designs, and/or a combination approach. I'm not sure what you mean by the Masterverse/New Eternia situation?

We were always bound for a pivot to non-Movie figures anyways. And lucky for us this time around, they CAN'T just go "Well, the media tie-in figures are close enough to what everyone wants... right?", so we won't be stuck with bad-mediocre incarnations of everybody for a long while. Luckily the figures are actually delightful now, as well.

This movie has brought a lot of attention to MotU, and the lines seemed to be doing well enough prior to it. I figure we'll be more comfortable collecting MotU than we were before the film came out.

I am really hoping for figures of Mekaneck and Dian, though. And I hope Dian leads to female eternian troops in general. There are MANY hyper-niche characters that could be kitbashed together if we even just got one.

In the first credit scene, there was a very special villain in the background. Did you all see him?

I think I missed this, but quote me in a post over on the spoiler thread. I'm curious!

Cool. I edited and took out that last line just in case it would spoil anything too special. I'll definitely head over to the spoiler thread.

Ends too soon and/or restarts.
To be fair..... Masterverse lasted for 5 years. That's not a short amount of time. MOTU just has an insane amount of variations. So you either end up with something that feels incomplete, or you focus down on one version and give every other kind of fan the finger.
But yeah, I'd love for Chronicles to outlast Masterverse, provided they can keep the quality up and get us lots of different versions of all the characters we love.

Fair. Just wish it had been more complete across a single theme. New Eternia could've done so much more. Hopefully Chronicles goes the distance.

Based on He-Mania's wave listings we have at least 2 more waves of movie Chronicles - Teela, Ram Man (single carded), Evil-Lyn, Beast Man, a second He-Man (possibly Adam) & second Skeletor (the suited one we've seen pictures of?).

You could definitely get another couple of waves out of the movie or start mixing waves between movie and more updated classic ("toy") designs like King Grayskull and Scareglow.

Long term, whether they pivot sooner than planned or not Chronicles looks set to be the main collector line and replace Masterverse moving forward so it feels like it's only a matter of time before we get "toy" versions of all the main characters in it.

Yeah, 5 years is a good run but there's still a few "essential" characters missing from New Eternia like Sorceress and Orko (and Battle Cat). It's a shame they never got there but I love what we did get.

Ideally, outside of the movie, I'd like to see Chronicles stick more to one style and cover more characters (like Classics and Origins both did pre their respective cartoon collections) than multiple sublines. The classic but updated look of King Grayskull and Scareglow is a good start. I'm hoping we see more like them at SDCC next month.

I mean, there have been many cases of a film not doing all that great at the box office, but the toys selling pretty well. Especially if it's a pre-established property like this, I feel like, as long as the toys themselves keep selling well, the box office performance is almost an entirely different issue.

I did end up taking an X-Acto knife to He-Man's skirt, and it really does make a nice bit of difference. Only had one little mishap where, due to the angle and lighting, I accidentally sliced into one of the straps, but it wasn't too bad, and easily fixed with some glue. But no other bodies parts were sliced off- mine or his!

I always forget that it's been 5 years since Masterverse started. 5 years is a long, long time. But it's never felt like it's been around that long, if only because of how the line never got "deep" into the roster. MOTUC was around for just a little bit longer, and got so much deeper than Masterverse ever did. Though that's just what happens when you're split between doing so many different design styles of the same core group of characters over and over again. I just hope they stick to the direction of these first two "standard" Chronicles figures, and create a new line as expansive as MOTUC.
