Mattel MOTU Chronicles Movie Figures

I just opened King Grayskull and I am fucking blown away. I'm actually ANGRY at how good this figure is compared to Masterverse, a series I genuinely loved, because this is going to be a contender for my figure of the year. The range of motion is next generation good, every joint and twist is smooth as butter. The face sculpt is amazing, animated without being cartoonish. Yeah, he's scaled down a bit but I put him next to Masterverse He-Man and he looks like a six foot tall guy next to a six foot three guy - they don't look like they don't belong on the shelf together so that whole other line isn't wasted - of course a hundred generations ago the man would be a little smaller, right? And he scales beautifully with Savage Crucible, Mythic Legions, and pretty well with Marvel Legends.

If Mattel does this kind of work with the new DC adult collector line figures it's going to be fucking wild. This guy went from "should I buy him?" to "how do I get more figures to go with him?" in SECONDS.

I think, in particular, people are going to get a lot of mileage out of the Masterverse 'monster' figures like Two Bad or Clawful, or even Buzz Off. Stuff that is even easier to gloss over size differences with as 'they're just really big.' Actually.. I bet Chronicles figures are going to look awesome with Two Bad and Snout Spout, in particular.

Honestly, they're going to look great on the shelf together. I think if they re-release the ladies, MAA, and maybe some non-huge guys like Stratos or Man-E-Faces the two lines will work very well together. I'm PLEASANTLY surprised by it. Even Battlecat looks fine with him.

This has been in the back of my mind regarding these since the first few pictures started trickling out. The non-human characters can probably just be fudged in for the time being. It's really only going to be an issue when characters like Teela are standing next to someone who should be taller than her.

This makes me so happy to hear. Sounds like Chronicles is going to be an improvement in almost every way.

Yeah, my IMMEDIATE want is just like, the core four or six characters and they can take their sweet time with the monsters. I don't even mind having, say, Fisto being slightly taller than the others. It just looks like height variation.

Although I just checked and believe it or not, Teela and She-Ra are shorter than King Grayskull! NOT BY MUCH, but like, if the King is six feet tall, the ladies look 5ft10. Evil-Lyn appears taller but she has that headdress piece that makes her taller rather than her actual head. They don't look bad together!

I'm floored. Because to be fair I was in my glory with Masterverse and Origins - one was the fully articulated MOTU line I missed out on by not being a collector during Classics, and the other was pure nostalgia joy for the toys we had as kids. This new line looks to just be a really damned good design.

Oh man...knowing the ladies are ever so slightly smaller than KG is even BETTER news! And yeah, characters like Fisto can just be big, burly dudes, so that works as well!

That IS assuring that Teela and Evil Lyn and probably Adora are all just shorter than KG BUUUT they all have stupid single hinge swivel elbows that the more I pose them, the more I dislike them. The females need an upgrade of this quality as well. I just wanna finish out the Vintage Collection, then I close the book on Masterverse.

Honestly, you pointing this out makes me even more inclined to get the ladies in Chronicles assuming they fix the damned elbows and hips. I haven't had good luck with hip movement in Masterverse the past few female figures and yeah, transitioning to the single-hinge elbows suuuuucked. This does make me abandon any delusions I had of trying to make a better version of the ladies with other parts and just wait for Chronicles, especially because they SHOULD scale pretty well with the male Masterverse figures for now.

Well, at the very least, we've seen the promo photos of Chronicles (movie) Lyn and Teela and they definitely have improved articulation over Masterverse ladies.

I'm counting on that. Honestly, I just gotta move forward with Chronicles. I'm immediately spoiled by the new articulation - the 180º butterfly shoulders, the ball/socket pivots at the waist and mid-torso, double elbows and knees, double pegged ball hinge wrists and ankles? On a mass market figure?? Mattel has finally caught up, and I'm not looking backwards.

Oh, I will DEFINITELY want updates of the ladies in Chronicles, no doubt about it! I'm just happy the Masterverse versions won't look weird in the display until we receive said updates.

I found ScareBro in the wild.
