As cults go I'd say this one is on the very low end of the spectrum to be worried about.

I think there is some nostalgia for that, but mostly if I was a toy company and I could get away with 5 POA, softer sculpt and limited paint figure as a nostalgia item while charging a comparable amount to fully articulated, detailed and painted figure, why wouldn't I go that route? It really isn't meant to be an action figure as much as a pop culture collectible.Side note: A lot of the little independent toy companies were showing figures designed to look like the proportions and articulation of class MOTU (5 POA). There were more at least three large displays for those types of figures. I wonder if older more niche collectors like that over realistic proportions and articulation. Something for me to watch for I guess. It's just interesting that there is a ton of new product for that collector community all of a sudden.
If it's the same group we'll probably end up adopting the fucking thing.
"Neopets has a long history of amazing train wrecks," notes Millennial who absolutely had a Neopets account. So I'm excited to hear about this and roll up a Starry Lupe.So neither of the two TTRPG industry news shows I listen to every week covered the Kickstarter and they generally will at least give a minute or two of air time to anything that's caught the interest of the TTRPG community a bit (they covered the effin' NEOPETS TTRPG this week, if that's any indication of how deep they dive - apparently the Neopets RPG is a train wreck if anyone is old enough to have played the old flash game). It may be that they'll cover it this coming week but I reckon if there's any debate of is this a toy kickstarter or is it a TTRPG kickstarter, if the industry itself doesn't even notice, that's pretty telling.
Apparently the parent company put the development equivalent of "stop that and reboot" on the studio making the TTRPG last week - not canceling it but they are NOT happy with how it's coming along. It came up as part of a discussion about what's most important to consider when developing a TTRPG for an existing IP: your own opinion, the IP owner, or the fans, and the answer was depends on who's paying you, and if the IP owner says don't do that, you listen."Neopets has a long history of amazing train wrecks," notes Millennial who absolutely had a Neopets account. My wife is a Neopets superfan. Let me tell you, that community is fucking pissed.(they covered the effin' NEOPETS TTRPG this week, if that's any indication of how deep they dive - apparently the Neopets RPG is a train wreck if anyone is old enough to have played the old flash game).
And while Neopets has always included moments of higher stakes and darker themes, those elements must be handled thoughtfully and appropriately with sensitivity and inclusivity at the forefront.
I guess there were a lot of sex/romance options.Breaking a game irreparably and then having to start it from scratch? It really is the Neopets experience.
Edit: Here's the official statement from the Neopets team on the RPG.
What the hell did this game DO?!
