Considering they just shipped that "bonus" dwarf head (which I really like, BTW) with Rising Sons in a little plastic baggy they tossed in the box, I bet they can find a way to mail out a couple hundred red-haired lady heads without too much backend effort.

If people could band together to go after villains the way action figure Youtubers will go after someone who shits on their favorite brand, everybody who ever went to a certain island would have been in prison four years ago. I've had social media accounts where I don't even follow action figures stuff pushing rage-bait 4H fan sites popping up about this.

This is the same guy as Nostalgia Unboxed, right? If so, this is my second yellow flag with this guy, and I just started following him last month.

If anything, the fact that every new streaming series seems to come from some hot new book or series on BookTok tells me that there's an audience actively trying and recommending new things all the time, it's just not in nerd spaces. We used to be forward-looking and now we're getting lapped by wine moms.

Well the issue is this is primarily a touring con exclusive. It should have been a ‘hand over cash, get a figure’ with no shipping involved. After this year’s cons they will put up the amount set aside for online sales but that’s nearly a year away.

They also said they aren’t going to just slyly give these away at the cons either. Seems like it will be a separate purchase to further distance the heads from the warrior and to make up for that lowered price on the figure. I’m curious how it goes and to see MIB collectors be pissed none of these would technically be unopened figures.

To be fair, the wine mom book industry has massive, and very similar, problems to nerd IPs in terms of executives only only wanting to pay for established IPs to lower risk and only telling the same story over and over again. That industry has problems that are just comics/fantasy/sci-fi with a different coat of paint on it and can be JUST as judgmental and nasty. (A ton of my friends work in romance publishing and it's... let's put it this way, I used to think meanest people in publishing were SFF nerds and now I find SFF nerds to be reasonable in comparison.)

It's so weird because Johnny is otherwise (seemingly) such a nice and inclusive guy and gets legitimately upset when people say shitty things in his comments. Surprising to see him go to bat for the AI Toy Company.

Yeah... but I think it's mostly harmless. Like, lots of otherwise well-intentioned or decent people have childish senses of humour. I can overlook stuff like that if they're otherwise decent people. It's so hard to say sometimes, though.
 
It took me an embarrassingly long time to even get what the joke was supposed to be. And the trouble is, that builds up potential energy that just makes the cringe that much more kinetic.
 
The Nostalgia Unboxed channel pivoted at some point to cater to a ~14 year old audience. His reviews on that page tend towards that audience. Tons of anime boobie figures and DBZ. He now does his old head/Gen X/Millennial content on a separate channel.

To that point, he's been very successful, in a short period of time he built up a large following of next generation collectors who interact a lot with his accounts. Not my bag by far but it is what it is. Unlike figure youtubers of the past who were just dudes that kind of stumbled into the medium accidentally and still keep it as a hobby and not a vocation, I think Nostalgia Unboxed came in distinctly to become a YouTuber and make it his day job, so in some ways he's more intentional about audience building over authenticity, I think.

At the end of the day, whatever crass or unethical things 4H has done, they pale in comparison to the decades of horrific things done by Marvel, DC, Disney, etc., in the past, and the stuff they are currently doing in the present. Like at a ratio of 1:1,000,000.

It reminds me of the Tim and Eric sketch "All the Food is Poison"

I'd go to bat for 4H over any of those companies any day, and their products. But everyone picks their poison.

Why is it always this bullshit tribalism, though? We do we have to -choose- which shitpiles we're going to wallow in? Can't we do our best to hold them ALL accountable? And when they're smaller, like the 4H, isn't it somewhat -easier- to hold them accountable? Why does everyone want to bitch about the crappy things Disney does, but their dicks get caught in their zipper when it's the 4H doing it?
 
Well, at least here, I see a lot of people coming out with swords drawn against 4H, in the sole 4H thread, yet there's many Marvel and DC threads that aren't, like, coming at those brands with the same ire... when, if anything, they are guilty for far more heinous things than making MOTU tribute figs... like facilitating things like sexual abuse, amongst others.

So I agree - why always the bullshit tribalism? I'm not sure. I think certain brands here get a pass while others don't, and while I agree 4H should be held to account, by and far they are guilty of a lot less, which does actually matter. I say that as an artist making art in the world in comics and animation. As far as holding their feet to their fire, I'd personally have no problem asking Eric to credit Bok's wife for the duck art (which was a pretty great helmet design) at the next con we are both at, for what it's worth. I don't have a dog in the MOTU fight.
 
For what it’s worth, I think there are peaks and valleys of criticism of various brands/companies all across this board. This just happens to be a moment where the 4H thread is trending critical: we saw this a while back with Valaverse, and I do see it happen at the bigger companies as well.

I think it feels more *personal* when it’s about a smaller company. Ultimately, I’d say there is legitimate criticism to be leveled at them *all*.

Yes, and I did recently post here that he was starting to grow on me. What was your other yellow flag, if you don't mind saying? (Edit: just saw your other post. Yeah, I like some of his bad humor, but it doesn't always land)

He said something recently about not believing he should put in time to do reviews if it did not benefit him. Not egregious, but I didn't necessarily agree with that vibe. As someone said, he does a lot of anime type girl reviews. Is that because he gets freebies from his sponsor or easy views. He said one hit 250K views!

Btw, I felt the Red Sonja Instagram carried things too far with the spamming, but that had nothing to do with the gender of the person. I was even apparently following their account...and didn't unfollow. Just thought it was unprofessional if you're a business that would like to be taken seriously.

I don't know about everyone else, but I know I tend to get more frustrated when smaller guys do shady stuff because I want to support them. Disney and Warner Brothers are actively evil every fuckin' day. Less holding them to a higher standard and more being like c'mon guys. Don't fuckin' make me feel bad supporting you.

Like, I want to write up my impressions of the Rising Sons but it feels lame to do so during the brouhaha over a ginger.
