Star Wars Black Series

They "buried" it? Like, as in never releasing it outside of the boxset? I never realized that.

I prefer Chewie with his center part, so I've mostly stuck to those. And DST's version. :)

It was released 'normal' once, single-carded. But there was some weirdness with the releases in that the only single-card release of that body, to my knowledge, was strangely hard to find.

The lanky original Chewie has been released 5 or 6 times, maybe 7 if you include the Solo Chewie with the different accessories. They did the new body, but it wasn't necessarily an easy figure to get single-carded and I -believe- the only time it was reissued was with the dog-collar around his neck, which I don't think any collectors were snapping up as their primary ANH-display Chewie. Maybe not buried - but Hasbro definitely didn't seem particularly interested in making the regular version of that Chewie as available as the original version had been. Resulting in that original version ending up as THE Chewie for a lot of Black Series displays.

I believe they even re-issued the original Chewie (Archive collection, maybe?) -after- they newer Chewie had already come out. Which is super weird, but I could be misremembering.

It'll be nice to see that corrected and a good, more modern-looking Chewie out there for collectors to grab. Maybe in another year or two they'll toss this one on a vintage card to get it back out there, as I expect it's going to be a popular figure.

I do like like Chewie with a center part. I used the one from SOLO for a looooong time as my display piece, just swapping out the bowcaster.

That Han is a thing of beauty. One of my favorite figures ever from the old power of the force line was when they finally started redoing everything with the correct proportions instead of superhero, and we finally got the A New Hope Han that only had one thigh swivel so you could cross the leg at the table.

There's a whole Halcyon Youth thing going on there with that era of figures and that part of my life, and just seeing him on that video made me feel good.

Although... Ironically with the new leg articulation he probably won't be able to cross legs.

You guys... .before I break something; Does the new Farmboy Luke have calf-swivels? My Luke is so fucking weird -- his knee has to face completely sideways for his foot to point forward. The only way to fix it would be to swivel the calf around so that the front of the shin is in line with the front of the knee joint. But like... it won't do it. But if there's no swivel, I don't even imagine how this could even happen. What is going on?

Yes.

He has knee and boot swivel. I just did it.

Heat them up? The left one was immobile at first, but the right was smooth.

Yeah, it's the left one. I just wanted to make sure it's actually there before I go reefing on it. I heated it up once and it didn't budge, which made me think I'm just crazy and there's nothing there. I'll try again.

Doing a bit of rearranging last night with which version of which character is on display and as I was admiring the stupid number of excellent Obi-Wan figures I own I... dropped all the Kenobi lightsabers and mixed them up. I am the kind of neurotic lunatic who keeps all the pieces with the original figure. I know in my heart it really doesn't matter which blue lightsaber which Kenobi is holding, but... MY ANXIETY. THEY HATH BEEN MIXETHED.

Unrelated, ever since my vision started going on me my typing has gotten embarrassingly worse, and I just almost called him Obi-Wan Kenboy and I cannot stop laughing at that visual.

I do think the new Chewie scales a little better. The old one, at least with the new Han, looks like there'd be way more than a foot between them if they were scaled up to normal size (there's only about 14 inches between Harrison and Peter).
Chewbacca WAS well over a foot taller than Han. The two actors were 6' 0.5" and 7' 0.5" back when Star Wars filmed. Ford is closer to 5' 10" these days, and Mayhew almost certainly shrank as well relative to his younger height since he had poor health later in life. The production crew put Mayhew into 3-inch lifts, and Mayhew has claimed that the Chewie mask increased his height by another 3 inches. That puts Chewie at about 7' 7" minimum, and that's at least 1.5 feet taller than Han. The production notes for Star Wars say Chewie was supposed to be 7' 5".

For the actor heights I used this web site:

Mayhew himself used to claim he was 7' 3" and that in the Chewie suit he was 8 feet tall, but that site specializes in reverse-engineering real heights based upon analyzing all available information particularly side-by-side photos with people of different heights knowing that actors usually exaggerate their real heights. I tend to trust that site more than actors, and it has been around now for almost two decades.

So I don't see a great reason to shrink Chewie. I skipped the SHF Chewie because he's an inch shorter than the much closer to accurate Black Series version.

Maybe it could help if you see the older Chewie as Peter Mayhew and the shorter one is Joonas Suotamo?

By the time Force Awakens filmed they were virtually the same height. Joonas is 6' 11", and while Mayhew used to be close to 7' 1" when younger he had shrunk a few inches by 2015. Here he is standing next to Joonas looking pretty much the same height.
